Healthy Apple Crisp Recipe With Granola

Ingredients Equipment Instructions Nutrition

We all need an arsenal of recipes using apples, and this healthy apple crisp with granola should be in it. It’s warm, comforting, and bursting with cozy flavors. My cinnamon-cooked apples serve as the base, topped with creamy yogurt, crunchy granola, and you can enjoy this comforting fall dessert in about 15 minutes!

I love adding a drizzle of peanut butter, but often swap it with my easy pumpkin sauce, especially when I’m craving fall flavors. Use any granola you like, or even nuts. It checks all the boxes with a delicious combination of flavors and textures!

Similar to my apple yogurt parfait, Greek yogurt adds protein, and granola gives fiber and healthy fats. If you need ideas for recipes using apples, this recipe is the perfect way to do it!

Healthy Apple Crisp

Admittedly, this is more of an idea than a recipe. Traditional apple crisp usually involves making a streusel topping with oats, butter, and spices, spreading it over fresh apples before baking. It’s absolutely delicious and one of my all-time favorite apple desserts, but it takes a considerable amount of time. This healthier twist offers similar flavors in less than 20 minutes!

In addition to being easy and healthy, this simple apple crisp is easily adaptable to a dairy-free, gluten-free, and high-protein diet. See my tips below for nearly doubling the protein, along with ingredient substitutions. Swap the fruit, yogurt, and toppings with products that work best for you.

Healthy Apple Crisp

Since the base of this recipe is my easy-cooked apples, feel free to double or triple that recipe. They will last several days in the refrigerator, and can be used to make overnight oats with apples, spooned over pancakes or French toast, or stirred into yogurt. I have several ideas on how to use them in that blog post.

This recipe uses no additional sugar. Once the apples are cooked, their natural sweetness is enhanced. Combined with our favorite granola, which is slightly sweetened, we didn’t feel the need to add any more. Having said that, feel free to drizzle the bowl with honey, maple syrup, or sweetened yogurt before adding it to the dish.

Step-By-Step Instructions

From start to finish, you can have my healthy apple crisp ready to enjoy in under 20 minutes!

  1. Start by cooking your apples. My recipe can be found above.
  2. Add one cup of the cooked apples to the bottom of the serving dish.
  3. Top with 1/2 cup of your favorite plain or flavored Greek yogurt.
  4. Sprinkle on 1/4 cup of your store-bought or homemade granola for crunch.
  5. Drizzle with one tablespoon of 100% peanut butter to balance the flavors.
  6. Sprinkle with a tiny pinch of sea salt to enhance the sweetness

Pro tip. To pump up the protein in this recipe, you can mix a scoop of your favorite vanilla protein powder into the yogurt before adding it to the bowl. This literally doubles the amount of protein in the dish. I LOVE Levels Protein (and have no affiliation with the company). It’s just good, clean protein powder that tastes great and has amazing ingredients!

Ingredient Notes

  • Good-quality Greek yogurt helps make this apple crisp healthier, adding additional protein and beneficial bacteria for your gut. Depending on the brand, Greek yogurt can add up to an extra 24 grams of protein!
  • Granola adds crunch, and some brands like this one offer a decent amount of both protein and fiber. The granola you choose can completely change the flavor profile of the dish. Pumpkin spice granola would be perfect for the fall season, while a cranberry spice granola gives all the Christmas vibes!
  • If you don’t have granola, any nuts or seeds will work as a substitute. Toasted pecans and walnuts are among my favorites, as are hemp seeds and pumpkin seeds in the fall. Chia and/or flax seeds provide even more crunch, protein, and fiber.
