What To Wear To Disney World: A Monthly Guide

What to wear to Disney World depends mostly on one thing: the time of year. However, Orlando, Florida, can have drastic temperature changes, and we’ve experienced it firsthand. After visiting the parks for over 40 years, we’ve learned a thing or two about how to be prepared!

If you are planning a Disney trip, we will cover average temperatures throughout the year, packing list essentials, and tips we learned the hard way. This post will help you be prepared for rain, cold snaps, and unbearable heat rather than finding yourself scrambling when it unexpectedly happens, and yes, you can literally experience all of those in a single day. We have!

What To Wear To Disney World

A few years ago, we visited in early December, which typically brings beautiful weather, but the weather had different plans. The day we arrived, the temperatures unexpectedly jumped to over 85ยฐF, which is hot in Orlando. We spent our first afternoon at Walmart buying cheap basics (along with what felt like a thousand other Disney guests). I had two dresses similar to the one delivered via Amazon and lived in them! A few days after buying new clothes, the temperatures plummeted.

Some months are more predictable, like July through September, but in the nearly 40 years we’ve been visiting Disney World, trust me when I say we have seen it all!!

Before we dive in, if you love going all out and showing off a cute Disney OOTD, this post is more about practical things to wear. I want to prepare you for what to expect month to month so you don’t end up at Walmart like us or spending way too much money in a Disney gift shop. However, if you love a cute Disney outfit, we have plenty of inspiration for you to check out below!

What To Wear To Disney World

When it comes to packing for Disney World, there’s a lot to remember, especially if you’re traveling with kids. We’ve been taking our grandson to Disney World since he was a baby, and my daughter has some fantastic posts for parents if you want to check them out below.

For this post, I will focus on clothing, with a few exceptions. Here is a short list of what I consider absolute non-negotiables, no matter when you visit.

  • Sun Protection: Do not underestimate the Florida sun. Protect your face, neck, and chest even in winter. This is the best sunscreen for adults, and no one can convince me otherwise!
  • Sunglasses: Preferably with 100% UV protection to protect your eyes from sun damage.
  • Lip Balm: Don’t forget your lips! Bring a balm that features built-in UV protection.
  • Hats: Baseball caps or sun hats keep the sun out of your eyes and protect your scalp.
  • UPF 50+ Clothing: Lightweight, breathable, light-colored clothing with built-in sun protection is a total game-changer. I buy these specialized T-shirts for our Disney trips!
  • Shoes: Comfortable shoes are a must year-round. You’ll be walking thousands of steps a day!

The Weather At Disney World

While timing is the biggest factor, keep a few other things in mind.

  • The Florida Heat
    • Orlando is hot nine months out of the year. We typically see about three months of beautiful, mild temperatures from mid-November through mid-February. By March, temperatures climb back over 80ยฐF. Standing in a long line with the midday sun bearing down makes 80ยฐ feel much hotter. If you dislike hot weather, plan your trip dates accordingly.
  • Your Personal Weather Tolerance
    • We visited Disney World last August, and the heat was so brutal it made me wonder how I ever lived in Florida full-time. On the other hand, we went in January, when it was so cold we had to buy heavy winter coats at Walmart. Riding Expedition Everest when it is 37ยฐF outside is not fun. My husband loves the cold. I do not, so my packing list looks very different from his.

Instead of going month by month, I break the year into seasonal blocks since the weather shifts every three to four months.

March to May

  • Daytime temperatures start to climb, regularly reaching the high 80s by May. Mornings can still be quite cool, especially in March. My husband is fine in T-shirts, but my daughter and I bring layers. I also love a lightweight sweater like the one shown in the photo above. I would always rather be too warm than too cold, so that’s another thing to consider.
    • For Men: Long-sleeve UV-protection shirts are great. They are lightweight but offer extra protection on cool mornings and evenings. My husband also likes basketball shorts for quick morning coffee runs and packs sweatpants for surprise chilly mornings.
    • For Women & Kids: Stick to layers. Pair lightweight shirts with light cardigans or jackets. It is much easier to take a layer off than to scramble inside a park gift shop where you will spend more than you wanted. Personally, I don’t love layering, so I opt for a lightweight sweater that keeps me warm enough in the morning and just light enough for the afternoon.

You can find all of my non-clothing Disney essentials and recommendations directly through my Amazon Disney Storefront.

June, July, August

  • Expect high temperatures, heavy humidity, and the start of Florida’s rainy hurricane season. By August, temperatures reach the high 90s with a heat index over 100ยฐF. Humidity returns with a vengeance by June, completely changing how I pack.
    • For Men: Moisture-wicking T-shirts are essential. I bought my husband packs of these lightweight, UV-protective shirts last August, and he constantly commented on how comfortable they kept him. They dry quickly, unlike cotton shirts that stay wet with sweat. He pairs these with comfortable shorts in multiple colors. He also lived in these lightweight Quicksilver shorts, which dry fast and are meant to go from water to shore while still looking nice.
    • For Women: This is the perfect time to lean into lightweight dresses, rompers with built-in shorts, shorts, and tank tops. Loose, light clothing is key. As crazy as it sounds, if you’re cold-natured, I still recommend a super-light summer cardigan in your park bag for long spells inside air-conditioned restaurants.

September to November

  • Florida’s hurricane season lingers until the end of September, and it’s as hot and humid as August. Toward the end of the month, into October, you’ll have milder evenings and a lower chance of rain. November is the most spring-like month of the season, with daytime highs in the low 80s and beautiful mornings.

December to February

  • With daytime highs in the 70s and morning lows in the 50s, this is our favorite time to visit Disney World, but it’s also the most unpredictable season. It’s also the driest season of the year. However, we’ve experienced many unexpected cold snaps over the years, as seen in the picture above. I’m wearing a fleece jacket, but by the afternoon, I’m in just a T-shirt.
    • My husband still wears shorts most days but brings sweatpants, jeans, T-shirts, and a couple of hoodies, just in case.
    • I’m cold-natured, so I typically bring leggings and jeans, plus big, cozy sweaters and sweatshirts. However, just a few years ago, it was still 85ยฐ at the beginning of December.

Final thought on what to wear to Disney World: Watch the AccuWeather 10-Day Forecast and pack accordingly, prioritize comfort, and pack sunscreen – even in the winter!
