This easy honey mustard dressing recipe can be whipped up in about 10 minutes, and you can serve it as a dip, dressing, or spread!
My easy honey mustard dressing recipe is easy to make and packed with fantastic flavor. It’s creamy and delicious, with a few extra touches for pizzazz!
We all need a few go-to condiment recipes in our back pocket, and a killer honey mustard should be on that list! It’s one of those sauces that falls off of my radar, but every time I make it, I ask myself why I don’t make it more often. It’s so underrated! The savory, sweet, tangy flavors complement so many dishes. I recently used it in a kale salad – and WOW. So good!
Like most of my sauce recipes, I combine yogurt and mayonnaise here. It’s the perfect base. Greek yogurt is thick, creamy, low in calories, and high in protein. Mayonnaise is rich, creamy, and savory. Combining them provides the perfect base for many of my condiment recipes.
When I was done shooting this recipe, my son poured the extra sauce on top of fried shrimp, and he said it reminded him of coconut shrimp. That makes sense since what we all love about coconut shrimp is the combination of crunchy, savory shrimp with subtly sweet flavors. Don’t limit yourself to chicken nuggets. This sauce is delicious with salads, protein bowls, roasted veggies, and more!
Easy Honey Mustard Dressing Recipe
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- Better ingredients. When you make it yourself, you control what goes into it.
- Thanks to less mayonnaise and more Greek yogurt, it’s higher in protein.
- A few additional ingredients give this recipe a more complex and nuanced flavor.
- It’s customizable. Add more of what you like and less of what you don’t.
- It’s gluten-free, low-carb, and can be dairy-free with dairy-free yogurt.
Easy Honey Mustard Dressing Ingredients
- Greek yogurt. This makes the dressing rich and creamy without the extra fat and calories from more mayonnaise.
- Mayonnaise. We need some here. It provides fat and richness to the sauce and gives it a classic flavor.
- Honey. You can’t have honey mustard dressing without it! We prefer raw, local honey. More on that below.
- Yellow AND Dijon mustard. Using both gives the sauce more of that pizzazz I mentioned above and a more well-rounded flavor.
- Apple cider vinegar and lemon. We need some acid to cut through the fat and richness, and we like using a combination of vinegar and citrus. Combining both gives the dressing a more nuanced flavor without the hardness of using one or the other.
- Olive oil. The olive oil adds flavor and fat. It can also add a touch of fruitiness and spice, depending on the kind you use.
- Seasonings. Paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, Aleppo pepper, and salt.
What is Aleppo Pepper?
I recently fell in love with Aleppo pepper. Made from Halaby chile peppers, it’s milder than crushed red pepper and provides more flavor. It’s bright and tangy with a fruity flavor and a mild heat. The flavor is a cross between a raisin and a sun-dried tomato – but in the form of a pepper. Even though it’s a Mediterranean spice, I use it in everything where I want a little more flavor. I use it more as a flavor enhancer and find it goes well with practically everything. Use it anywhere you would black pepper or chili flakes for extra flavor with a hint of spice!
What Kind of Honey is Best for Honey Mustard?
We like natural or raw honey. It contains enzymes that can be damaged by mass production. High-quality, raw honey will also be lower on the glycemic index. Local honey contains local pollen, which can help with seasonal allergies. Raw honey is known to have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antibacterial benefits! If we don’t get it at the local farmer’s market, this our favorite brand.
How to Make Honey Mustard Dressing?
This recipe is so simple that I can hardly even call it a recipe!
- Add everything to a bowl.
- Whisk until completely smooth and well combined.
- Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to an hour before serving.
Let the dressing hang out in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes before adjusting the salt and other ingredients. As it sits, the flavors will develop and change. If you taste it before letting it sit, you’ll likely want to adjust it again, so I recommend waiting.
Serving Suggestions
Most people immediately think of chicken nuggets when serving honey mustard, and while that’s delicious, here are a few of my favorite ways to use it.
- Use it as a salad dressing and not just on green salads. It has a delicious sweetness to kale and broccoli salad as well!
- Drizzle it over roasted veggies or a punch of flavor! It’s especially delicious with roasted carrots and Brussels sprouts.
- Serve it with chicken strips, sweet potato fries, or warm pretzels for dipping.
- Cook with it! Brush it on chicken thighs before roasting or grilling for a sweet and savory spin.
- It can elevate your protein and grain bowls! The sweet and tangy flavors complement greens, sweet potatoes, roasted chickpeas, and vegetables.
- Coleslaw! I made a tropical coleslaw for my daughter’s Hawaiian-themed bridal shower that everyone loved. I started with my basic coleslaw and added a little honey mustard and crushed pineapple, and there wasn’t a bite left. Think outside the box!
- Spread it on wraps! My favorite combination is a tortilla, honey mustard dressing, ham, Swiss cheese, greens, and red onion. It’s such a perfect combination of flavors!
Products + Equipment Used in This Recipe
- A lemon juicer is the best way to ensure you get every drop of juice from your lemons!
- Big glass or stainless steel or plastic bowl – using a nice big bowl makes for easy mixing with no mess.
- Large whisk – makes quick work of whisking everything together.
- Storage jar – a clear, wide-mouth jar is perfect for presentation and serving or giving this as a gift!
Helpful Tips + Variations + Storage
- This easy honey mustard dressing recipe will last up to a week in the refrigerator. Keep it in a sealed glass jar and give it a good stir before using it.
- Add more mustard, yogurt, mayonnaise vinegar, or lemon if it’s too sweet. Additional yogurt, mayonnaise, and/or mustard will stretch it, while more acid will help balance the sweetness.
- If it’s not sweet enough, you can add more honey!
- Add extra Aleppo pepper or a pinch of cayenne for a spicy kick!
I like this a little tangier than most, so I usually add some extra apple cider vinegar.
Questions About This Recipe
What can I use in place of apple cider vinegar?
- White wine vinegar would be a perfect substitute.
Can I use it as a glaze for ham?
- Not only yes, but HECK, yes! Just brush it all over the ham before baking, and repeat several times throughout the cooking process. The sugars in the honey will become deliciously caramelized and provide the ham with the perfect amount of sticky sweetness!
Is this spicy?
- The Aleppo pepper provides a mild heat, but you can spice it up with cayenne, sriracha, or crushed red pepper flakes.
Is honey mustard sauce dairy-free?
- My recipe has Greek yogurt in it, which does contain dairy. You could replace the yogurt with one of many dairy-free yogurt alternatives on the market. I like the Fage Best Self Dairy Free Greek Yogurt.
Can I use this as a salad dressing?
- I think it’s a little thick to be a dressing, but I often add extra vinegar, lemon, and olive oil to make a honey mustard vinaigrette. It’s delish!
